Green production process of polyisobutylene catalyzed by immobilized AlCl3

AlCl3 is one of the Friedel Crafts catalysts widely used in chemical and petroleum refining. It exhibits excellent catalytic performance in reactions such as alkylation, acylation, alkane isomerization, cracking, and polymerization. However, due to its strong corrosiveness, difficulty in separating the same product, and the generation of a large amount of wastewater and waste residue in production, which causes environmental pollution, its application is increasingly limited. The high-performance immobilized aluminum trichloride catalyst developed by the project team has a dual pore structure γ- Al2O3 was prepared using a unique two-step method as the carrier. This catalyst contains 20-50wt.% Low molecular weight PIB with an average molecular weight of 500-1500 can be prepared from the C4 fraction of isobutene using a suspension bed continuous reaction method under mild reaction conditions.

The characteristics of the immobilized AlCl3 catalytic polymerization PIB production process are as follows:

(1) In the traditional AlCl3 catalyzed PIB reaction process, the catalyst after the reaction needs to be separated from the product and requires unit processes such as alkaline washing and water washing. The new type of immobilized catalyst is easy to separate from the product, and can eliminate processes such as alkaline washing and water washing, reducing the original treatment process by nearly 10-30%, and does not produce wastewater or waste residue, which is pollution-free to the environment.

(2) Traditional AlCl3 catalysts cause severe corrosion to equipment, while new immobilized catalysts have less corrosion and lower requirements for equipment corrosion prevention.

(3) The new immobilized catalyst can produce PIB products with narrow molecular weight distribution, which can improve product quality and control molecular weight. By adjusting some polymerization process parameters, PIB products with different molecular weights (500-2000) can be synthesized. The molecular weight distribution of PIB products produced by the traditional aluminum trichloride catalytic system is relatively wide, and the color deviation is yellow when not controlled properly.

(4) Traditional catalysts have a short usage time and are discarded after a single reaction, while new immobilized catalysts have a long lifespan, good stability, and easy regeneration. Can be used for a long time, with a lifespan of over 1000 hours, and the regenerated catalyst can continue to be used.
