How to Choose Molecular Sieve Powder for PU Adhesive
Molecular sieve activated powder is the core moisture scavenger for polyurethane adhesives. It adsorbs trace water in PU systems to prevent the reaction between isocyanate (-NCO) and water that produces CO₂ bubbles, eliminates pinholes/voids, stabilizes curing speed (pot life), and improves bonding strength. The selection follows pore size type, key physical & chemical indexes, system compatibility, application scenarios, and dosage rules step by step.
1. Select the Right Molecular Sieve Pore Size Grade (Most Critical Step)
The core principle: only adsorb water molecules, avoid adsorbing polyols, plasticizers, solvents or PU prepolymer macromolecules to prevent formula destruction, viscosity drift and performance degradation.
① 3A (3 Å, Potassium-based) — #1 Preferred for Most PU Adhesives
Pore diameter: 0.3 nm; Water molecule diameter ≈0.28 nm
Advantages:
Ultra-selective adsorption: only captures water, no adsorption of alcohols, esters, plasticizers and PU raw materials; deep dehydration, can lower system moisture below 0.01%; mild alkalinity, minimal acceleration of PU curing, greatly prolongs working pot life; best anti-bubble effect for two-component structural PU adhesives, potting adhesives, laminating adhesives.
Static water adsorption: ≥23%
Best for: General 1K/2K PU adhesives, automotive structural adhesive, wood lamination PU adhesive, polyurea systems (universal overseas standard choice).
② 4A (4 Å, Sodium-based) — General-Purpose Budget Grade
Pore diameter: 0.4 nm; can adsorb water + small polar molecules (CO₂, trace volatile organics)
Advantages: Higher water adsorption capacity (~24%), low cost, wide adaptability
Drawbacks: Slightly wider pores, may adsorb tiny polar additives in PU formulas; stronger alkalinity shortens pot life moderately
Suitable for: Low-demand construction PU sealants, floor PU coatings, common assembly adhesives without strict pot life requirements.
③ 5A (5 Å, Calcium-based) — High Moisture Raw Material Systems
Pore diameter: 0.5 nm; Highest static water adsorption ≥25%, fastest dehydration speed
Advantages: Excellent for PU raw materials with inherently high water content; can adsorb water + CO₂ + trace acidic impurity gases
Drawbacks: Strongest alkalinity (ordinary powder pH=10.5–11.5), drastically shortens pot life if unmodified
Suitable for: PU adhesives made from high-humidity recycled raw materials, heavy-duty industrial sealants; choose surface-modified low-alkali 5A for long working time needs.
④ 13X — Not Recommended for Standard PU Adhesives
Largest pore size (1 nm), adsorbs almost all small molecules including solvents and polyols, damages PU formula balance; only used for complex odor-removing PU systems with many volatile impurities (rarely applied).
⑤ Surface-Modified PU-Specific Molecular Sieve Powder (Premium Choice)
Modified 3A/5A powder with adjusted surface alkalinity (pH reduced to 9.5–10.2):
Lower alkalinity avoids catalyzing -NCO curing reaction; pot life extended by 40%–60 mins vs ordinary powder
Better compatibility with PU resin, no agglomeration, less viscosity increase, ideal for transparent PU adhesives and high-end structural bonding.
2. Mandatory Key Technical Indexes to Check Before Purchase
(1) Particle Size & Dispersion
Standard particle size: 2–4 μm (1–5 μm range acceptable)
Reason: Ultrafine powder disperses evenly under high-speed stirring, no sedimentation/agglomeration; does not reduce adhesive transparency, tensile strength or smoothness; oversized particles cause rough adhesive surface and poor bonding.
(2) Adsorption Performance
Static water adsorption capacity: ≥23% (3A) / ≥24% (4A) / ≥25% (5A) (higher = stronger water removal ability)
Residual packaged water content: ≤0.5%
Raw powder with high initial moisture will release water into PU glue and cause bubbles directly.
(3) pH Value (Decides Pot Life Stability)
Ordinary powder: pH 10.5–11.5 (strong alkaline, accelerates curing)
Modified PU dedicated powder: pH 9.5–10.2 (weak alkaline, stable pot life, preferred)
Too high alkalinity leads to premature curing, insufficient operation time for construction.
(4) Bulk Density & Purity
Bulk density: 0.60–0.65 g/mL (balances filling performance and system viscosity)
White color, low insoluble residue, no heavy metal impurities (meets REACH for export products).
4. Recommended Dosage & Usage Rules
Standard addition dosage: 2%–5% by total formula weight
Low system moisture: 2%–3%
High raw material moisture / humid production environment: 4%–6%
Test gradient dosages to balance dehydration effect and cost.
Feeding method: Add into polyol component (Part A) and stir uniformly at high speed before mixing with isocyanate (Part B).
Storage: Molecular sieve powder is highly hygroscopic; seal tightly after opening, finish use quickly to avoid pre-adsorbing air moisture and losing activity.
5. Final Selection Checklist
Prioritize 3A modified powder for most PU adhesive formulas (balanced selectivity, pot life and dehydration efficiency)
Confirm particle size 2–4 μm, static water adsorption ≥23%, packaged water ≤0.5%, pH 9.5–10.2
Conduct small-batch trial production: test bubble condition, pot life, viscosity change and final bonding performance
Choose activated zeolite powder only (non-activated raw powder has no water adsorption capacity).
